The first step on Shakespeare´s tour is the Playhouse in London where the Blackfriars and The Globe theaters are. Both theaters were the most important of that time. Nearby located on Queen Victoria Street is St Andrew by the Wardrobe church where William Shakespeare was a member during fourteen years while working at the Blackfriars Theatre. At the St Andrew by the Wardrobe church you will able to appreciate one of the only six originals handwritten documents by Shakespeare.  The Globe theatre is Shakespeare´s iconic theatre and a unique building that offers special tours to learn more about its most famous playwright.  At this iconic place famous plays such as King Lear, Macbeath, Hamlet and Otelo among others, were presented for the very first time. Also do not forget to visit the beautiful Southwark Cathedral, the oldest cathedral church in London and where Shakespeare´s brother, Edmund was buried.  There is a large stained glass window dedicated to William Shakespeare depicting scenes from his plays, at the base of which is an alabaster statue representing the playwright reclining and holding a quill.

Oxford is known worldwide as the home of the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English speaking world.  From March to December, Shakespeare Oxford 2016 are celebrating the life of the playwright, work, and legacy through a festival of performances, talks, exhibitions, concerts, conferences, film showings, poetry and youth projects. The fest agenda includes a major Shakespeare exhibition at the Bodleian Library curated by Dr Emma Smith and Professor Simon Palfrey of the University of Oxford’s English Faculty, exploring themes of death in Shakespeare’s works.  For this interesting agenda Oxford it’s a must destination in order to follow Shakespeare´s steps.

Shakespeare´s birthplace

The town is a popular tourist destination owing to its status as birthplace of English playwright and poet William Shakespeare besides de river Avon. The Royal Shakespeare Company resides in Stratford’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre one of most prestigious of England. Its medieval landscape unveil the house where Shakespeare was born also where Anne Hathaway lived before marrying Shakespeare, the farm of his mother and “Halls Croft” where his sister lived.
In addition, you can visit the Church of the Holy Trinity where Shakespeare, his mother, his sister and brother in law Dr. John Hall are buried. This church is the oldest building in Stratford built around 1210 and it´s one of England´s most visited churches. You can also sail the Avon River and have lunch at the Bancroft gardens. During this year the classrooms where the artist studied will be open to the public as well as the medieval town hall.
